Renewable Energy Programs

Net Metering

Net metering allows Mississippi Power customers who connect approved Distributed Generation (DG) systems, such as solar panels, to the electric grid to buy and sell electricity to Mississippi Power.

When you generate electricity from your DG system for your home or business, it reduces the amount of energy you purchase from Mississippi Power. If your system produces more energy than you need, the excess power is exported back to Mississippi Power’s grid. A bi-directional meter measures both the amount of electricity exported back to the grid and the amount of electricity supplied from the grid by Mississippi Power to your home or business over the course of the month. This is known as “net metering.”

For more information on how these bi-directional measurements are used to calculate your bill, please click on “Understanding my Power Bill.”

Energy Purchase Programs

Mississippi Power customers interested in installing or who have already installed a DG system may be eligible to participate in one of Mississippi Power’s available energy purchase programs. For more information regarding the applicability and eligibility requirements, please click on the links below:

Renewable Energy Net Metering Rate Schedule “RENM”

  • Mississippi Power customer DG systems under this rate are limited to a maximum nameplate direct current capacity equal to the lesser of 110% of the customer’s annual peak demand (average kW during 15 minutes of highest use) or 20 kW for residential customers, and the lesser of 110% of the customer’s annual peak demand or 2 MW for non-residential customers.
  • The customer’s annual peak demand is measured in the calendar year preceding the year of installation of the DG system.
  • Residential customers with a maximum nameplate direct current capacity of more than 20 kW but not more than 100 kW may take service under the company’s Cogeneration and Small Power Production rate schedule.

Cogeneration and Small Power Production Purchases Rate Schedule “CSPP”

  • Mississippi Power customer DG systems under this rate are limited to a maximum capacity of 100 kW or less, and the electric generating facility must be a qualified facility (QF) under provisions of Sections 201 through 210 of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978.
  • Residential customers with a maximum nameplate direct current capacity of more than 100 kW may take service under the Company’s CPE rate schedule.

Note: Customers must have a valid interconnection agreement on file with Mississippi Power to participate in any of the above energy purchase programs. For more information regarding the interconnection process, please visit our Connecting to the Grid page.
