Mississippi Power introduces Louie’s Energy Explorers Program across service territory

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Formerly known as the “Energy Efficiency Education Program,”  Mississippi Power has recently launched the new Louie’s Energy Explorers Program at Oak Grove Elementary School in Hattiesburg.

Approximately 250 fourth and fifth graders learned about the different areas of home energy consumption and the strategies that could be implemented to make a difference in the heating and cooling, water heating, TV/computer, appliances and lighting areas they frequent every day.

“I am very happy to be able to continue teaching the importance of energy efficiency to students in our local communities,” said Energy Efficiency Education Representative Tamara Proctor. “In addition to the program’s change in look aesthetically, the relaunch also gives me the opportunity to incorporate new, engaging games and activities to further support energy efficiency and conservation.”

To conclude the presentation, students received upgraded energy efficiency kits that included an advanced power strip, kitchen aerator, bathroom aerator and LED dusk to dawn bulb.

“Once we return from fall break, our next unit will cover electricity and heat energy,” explained Oak Grove Elementary fourth grade science teacher Marie Manning. “Therefore, Ms. Proctor’s presentation today was extremely relevant and allows our scholars to have a head start on the knowledge needed to be able to apply energy efficiency not only at school, but also at home.”

Following each presentation, schools have the opportunity to win a $500 mini grant by completing and returning their Energy Explorers map, which encourages students to assess different areas in their home that they could easily make energy efficient.

Proctor will continue to visit schools across the service territory throughout the remainder of the school year.
