Mississippi Power CEO Anthony Wilson receives Distinguished Citizen Award

The Pine Burr Area Council of Mississippi Scouting recently honored Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony Wilson with the Distinguished Citizen Award for his longtime dedication to service and leadership for youth and communities across the region.

“It’s always special to be recognized by your community, so I am touched to have been chosen to receive this distinct honor,” said Wilson. “I am proud of the impact the Pine Burr Area Council has made – and continues to make – for our area.”

Held at the Great Southern Club in Gulfport, the annual dinner event hosts Scouts and leaders from across the area to honor an esteemed guest selected by the Council each year. Wilson, a D’Iberville native, was joined by his wife Tonya and three daughters to receive the recognition.

Gulf Coast Business Council CEO Jamie Miller introduced Wilson and highlighted his work spearheading the “It’s Time” campaign, which provided support from the business community for the state legislature to change the state flag. Miller also referenced Wilson’s commitment to safety.

“We have safety briefings before our meetings start, and it’s usually about ten people sitting around drinking coffee, but Anthony’s so passionate about safety and we understand where he’s coming from,” said Miller. “When I talk with business leaders across the Coast or the state, they all use the same words to describe Anthony Wilson. ‘Integrity. Leadership. Family.’ He’s incredibly worthy of this honor.”

In Wilson’s acceptance speech, he highlighted how the company and the Scouts share a mission to strengthen our communities and make them a better place to live. He spoke about leadership, personal integrity and the ability to make a remarkable impact as a responsible citizen.

“At Mississippi Power, we share many of the same values you’re being taught– principles such as trustworthiness, loyalty, bravery, helpfulness and courtesy for the brothers and sisters in our communities,” he said. “By working together and taking care of our neighbors, we inevitably make our areas a better place to live for everyone. We should all take pride in that responsibility.”

He continued by sharing personal life stories about how he and Tonya raised their three daughters as Girl Scouts. Wilson’s messages on the importance of communication, maintaining a positive attitude and setting expectations resonated with the crowd of attendees.
