Renew Our Rivers, Mississippi Power’s award-winning environmental stewardship program, recently held the annual Chunky River cleanup in partnership with East Mississippi Foothills Land Trust. This project follows successful efforts on the Okatoma River, Lower Pascagoula River, Tchoutacabouffa River, Deer Island and Pearl River County.

“Year after year, the Chunky River cleanup continues to be a huge success in preserving wildlife and the scenery in our service territory. Many of our employees are connected to these waterways and this was a great opportunity for us team up with the East Mississippi Foothills Land Trust and make a big difference,” said Renew Our Rivers Chair Charles Blount.

More than 30 volunteers worked together to canoe and kayak along the banks of the Chunky River to collect an estimated 700 pounds of debris.

In 2019, Renew Our Rivers has already collected more than 10 tons of debris and will continue into the fall with events scheduled for the Upper Pascagoula River, Pass Christian, Gulfport Lake/Big Lake, Back Bay and Red Creek.
